Kyusha Wheel Notes and Disclaimer

MK-2 and AP-1

My intention with this section is to provide the most comprehensive listing of kyusha wheels in the world. No small goal, I realize, and one that will probably never be complete. My motivation in doing so is entirely personal. Call it a product of sleepless nights with young children, and frigid temperatures that keep me out of the garage, I often find myself browsing Japanese forums and marketplaces looking for interesting things… and wheels have ended up being the most interesting of all. I have a massive database of pictures and notes on my computer, but it’s a mess to sort through. Organizing and simplifying this data for my own use is enough motivation for me to put it all on this website. And then my pride takes over and tells me I have to do it better than it’s ever been done before.

That means I’ve done my best to provide details of construction, sizing, colors and in some cases even weight of various wheels. Where possible I’ve included images that show various details of wheels, but often times, examples are so rare and hard to come by that that is impractical. Certainly though, this is not my lifes work, and there are holes and unknowns all over the place. In the end, I’d rather be driving (or at least wrenching) so if you the reader can help with unknowns, comments and emails are certainly appreciated. I hope though, that you will be able to provide some form of verification to back yourself. My methods of verification to this point include historic advertisements and brochures from manufacturers, but are mostly based on the knowledge of friends and enthusiasts in Japan, the viewing of example after example in marketplaces, and occasionaly first hand observations. As much of a wheel whore as I am… I estimate that there will be close to 500 models listed on this website in the near future, and I can say I’d like to have a different wheel for every day of the year, but my wife will never tolerate it.

As for my notes and there details. I have done my best to describe the general availability and cost of each model listed, but don’t place too much value in it. It is certainly hard to judge prices on USED wheels as each individual set is judged by it’s size and condition. Furthermore when buying used parts online, as at a swap meet, one can get lucky and find interesting things hidden in strange places, with with details and true value unknown to sellers. What I’ve given you is approximate and nothing more. As a general note, my “cost” grade starts at LOW, which would put a complete set of wheels in the median size of a condition not needing repair or excessive refinishing, around or under 2,0000円. MID range cost would be somewhere around 2,0000円 to 5,0000円 and HIGH is approaching 10,0000円.

As for availability; if we can visit a marketplace at any time and find a couple examples of a certain wheel set in a specific size, I have listed it as COMMON. RARE implies that I might find an example or two at any given time, but probably with poor sizing. VERY RARE indicates a wheel that is only ever seen from time to time, and if one is shopping for a specific size or color of that wheel, they will probably be shopping for a long time. EXTREMELY RARE wheels will appear even more seldomly and require a great investment of time and energy to find, but searching for ULTRA-RARE wheels will leave you feeling hopeless. Wheels that I’ve classified as ULTRA-RARE, are wheels that I might see only once a year or less, and even then probably not as a full set.
