Road & Track is full of lots of shit… and this probably belongs in that category, but on their Facebook feed this morning I saw something that applies to me. Something that I had already considered and evaluated, and started to act on…
The fruits of that action are seen above.
A quote from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden…
“Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be.”
So yah I want an STI because I imagine that I won’t feel guilty about driving it every day all winter, and I imagine that I could be a monster on ice. But there ain’t really a reason why I can’t do that in the ZN6… except that I’m a pussy.
The ZN6 is a car that I haven’t really given a chance. In almost two and a half years, it has just barely more than 10k km on it. I have taken the car to the office only a handful of times, but the real milage as come from three or four event trips. If the car is truly a Hachiroku… then I need to change how I think of it. All my favourite 86’s, were at one time cars that greeted me after a long day at school or work. They were cars that girls rode inside of. Cars that I enjoyed that sites, smells and sounds of everyday.
What I have to date is a tool for driving through cones. That is something… but not something great.
On this its third winter, the ZN6 will not hide in the barn.
So to cope with that, the car is rocking some comfortable new shoes: 16 7J +44 Work Emotion CR Kiwami. Tires are the new version of what was previously my favourite all-season tire: the Continental Extreme Contact DWS-06. I had the original DWS on my WRX, and found them perfectly capable of dealing with lots of slush and snow on warm winter days, and yet quite forgiving and drivable in dry conditions. We did a couple auto-x events on them in the WRX… and were slow, often brilliantly fun and sideways.
Of course some studded winters will be needed for lake action. Discussion amongst twin owners has been to this point, that 15’s can’t fit without serious caliper grinding action. Looking at how much space these 16’s have though, and I feel optimistic. Maybe optimistic enough to try…
It used to be that, you used to have the coolest and most unique wheels that nobody else have. The wheels you have now are something anyone can get from the Tire Rack or Vivid Racing catalogue. Is it because… All Q’s cool wheels are belong to Orrin. 😛
Also, that’s a very nice photo on the top, ghost lake sunrise.
5X100 is a serious party pooper. I think my Racing Harts are cool… but all my cool 5X100 shoes from WRX or Celica life are with Orrin or elsewhere. I’ve been hunting I swear…
And I feel great sadness.
I suppose we should have had one more conversation before I unloaded the 15″ Acroplis…
