Another weekend come and gone. Lethbridge is about how I remember it. The old backroads are short and tight and maybe not everything memory stacked them up to be, and the town is a little more crowded than before… but what can I expect.
The drifting event was great. I learned a lot about driving. Practiced up, performed well… shredded my tires like never before, and in the end, got eliminated in the best 8 by Rob in his carbed 86. Rob eventually made it to the final 2 before running out of tire and losing to Pat from STRD in his S13.
Best 8… really is… I figure… all I could hope for. After all… The other Calgary Corolla guys just shred. Migs, Devin and Rob… these guys are committed, and they back each other like friends should. Battle one, and it feels like your battling them all. It’s cool. I wanna be part of there crew when I’m at the track… but frankly… I can’t keep up with them off it. hehe. Well… sometimes not even on it for that matter. So that’s 3 guys. And then… Pat from STRD who is just rock solid. So… I’ve got to beat one of those four guys to make it into the top four… and they are ALL excellent. On top of that… there is the rest of the 16 drivers taking there shots. So… to some degree, I have to get lucky and hope someone who is better than me makes a mistake. That didn’t happen.
When I was up against Rob… I spun.
So… part of me says, that’s just the nature of drifting. Sometimes the best driver doesn’t win, sometimes he does. We make mistakes, the judges make mistakes, cars break. I think that’s something that has been missing from other drift competitions. After all, we all know each other at this point. We know who we think is better… and sometimes I think the judging has demonstrated that. In yesterdays case, it definitely came down to the two drivers who drove the best, and caught the breaks. And… how exciting is that.
The final 4 guys where driving sooo well. I finished 5th.
…that was a lot of fun. Thanks Chris.
