Well… not quite, but I’m going to look into it. The truth is… our RAV-4 is actually gross. It’s more gutless than our Echo even… and it’s not actually getting great gas mileage. 480km on 50Liters is worse than 10L/100km. The Echo surprisingly… uses about 30% less. But more than that… I’ve been frustrated over and over again, finding time to work on the AE86. Kids, wife and work seem to add up to a lot. I remember when driving places was fun. It’s not now… In someways, my AE86 is just a symbol of something good, and not actually something good at all. There are no more quiet moments in rainy parking lots, no more representing vs 240’s and Civics, no more slicing and dicing. Instead, boring dailies have made me a driving zombie. I’m the dude who maintains his lane on the drive home, and looks for distractions to driving: White Lies, Motorsports Mondial Podcast, Jim Rome etc etc.
I wonder if the CR-Z might be the future. Contrary to the Hachiroku driver stereotype, I actually love Hondas. The FT-86 is going to be EJ powered, and I think I’ve decided it might be a little flashy for me. In some ways… FR cars just seem irrelevant in the context of the streets and modern technology.
Not that I could ever sell the AE86. Not that the wife tax on a brand new car is insignificant at all. 5L/100km is an excellent endorsement though.
Due to my new commute I was looking at trading in the ep3, 9l/100 is the best I can squeeze out of it, I’m granny driving it too, except for the 35 km stretch where I have the cruise set at just under 120. I went and had a look at the crz and it is nice but I need one more seat for those days when I have to pick up the kids…..
Signed – old guy with baggage
lol. You were an old guy back when I was a kid. Can’t imagine now.
More realistic than a CR-Z is… an EG or EK maybe? I’ll probably just get something cheap and almost disposable. Looked at a Paseo on the weekend, and was impressed with everything except the headroom. Driving SUV’s and trucks made me forget that I’m too tall for most 90’s Japanese cars.
Then again… 0% financing on most new Honda’s right now… and CR-Z’s are not exactly flying out of dealerships.
