Angle Factory 1 has come and gone. This was by far the most challenging course I’ve ever driven, made up of three turns. Turn 1 was a third gear entry slightly decreasing radius, turn 2 was a second gear corner that got really tight at the end, and turn three was an increasing radius corner. The first two turns on their own were not so difficult for me, but linking them together, with a relatively long space in between them was much difficult. Turn three was super challenging for the low powered cars, and in the end, I only got it twice, such that I was happy with it.
Given these difficulties, I learned a LOT yesterday.
I played a little with the e-brake entering turn one in third gear. This worked for me, and let me initiate earlier then say a braking drift, or feint, but in the end, I couldn’t get the snappy feel I’ve come to love. So… I returned to clutch kick. This is my favorite manner of initiating just because it can be so fast and sharp.
Secondly… it took me all day… but I learned to NEVER lift off. It was interesting because I could drive the same line, with the same angle when I was modulating the throttle, but not consistently. As soon as I kept my foot down I could drive the first two corners consistently.
Finally… I learned that 86’s don’t have hp, and at some point… I want hp. Up until now, I’ve been able to do what other people do. Yesterday though, there was some good action going on, which I could not match. Fred in the R32, Mark and Andrew from Field Magic and D-sport in the sil-eighty, Christian in the R32… these were guys who amazed me. In some cases, I’m sure their skill is superior… but how much is car?
So… it makes me think about buying a cifero or chaser… just to see.
