I pulled apart my Bomber’s this week for some work. I’m not sure where I’m going. I feel like it’d be a shame to polish/blast them as it would destroy the 30 year old decaling that remains intact. Ha! I said they remain intact… but obviously just barely. It’s still something… for a wheel geek like me. All the bomber’s I’ve seen up until now have been refinished and void of these markings. The centers are a bit more rough though, and not as easy to clean by hand. I might end up giving them a bead blast and re-paint. At the very least, new “pierce” bolts are in store. I expected to have to drill some of them out, they appeared so bad. Even though that wasn’t the case… I’ll still play it safe.
Two of my wheels are from 1982, and two are from 1981. I’ve seen markings as early as 1978, and as late as 1983. I’ve actually wondered and done some research/pricing on making some custom shells to bump these wheels up to maybe a 7.5J width. That actually didn’t look to be as hard on the wallet as I originally thought. Still, it’s notable that the Bomber shares it’s wheel shell with the Hayashi Command of some years. And while the Command is still far from common, it’s conceivable that I could find a more aggressively sized set and swap shells for less than the cost of custom shells.
I scored some A3E’s last week though…
I generally SUCK at making choices… and instead just switch back and forth between as many options as possible.
Thats cool. How much each to widen? $200 or did you find an actualy reasonable source?
My Hayashi Comand say 1978 on the sticker, I cant bring myself to polish them either, they have a sweet comand sticker on the lip.
Well… Kodiak can make full shells for about $300 each. They’d be lighter than the Hayashi ones… but it’s probably too spendy. I’d have to really love these wheels… and in the end there are probably a few others I’d rather spend the money on.
