This can only mean one thing… and it’s not just the AE86. Both cars are gone.

WTF is going on?

A. My work makes me feel like a man.
B. Two little girls are really nice to come home to.
C. It’s almost mosquito season.
D. Japan was really really awesome.

WTF is going on?

I miss the AE86 horribly. It went first, almost on impulse. It was on Kijiji for a few days at a reasonable price. I may have been drunk when I listed it, or maybe cuddling a crying baby at 4AM. But someone actually called me one day and wanted to see it… like THAT NIGHT. A nice enthusiastic guy showed up. He loved the car, and believe me, I did everything I could not to let him buy it: I took none of his bartering, I took parts off, I told him everything imperfect about it… and then he pulled out a stack of cash.

batman-and-robinAfter that, the Celica didn’t really make sense. It felt like Robin without Batman: still rad, but what’s the point? My car life ideology revolves around stuff that is minimalistic and driver oriented. The Celica was way more fun to drive on the street, way faster in maybe all respects, way more practical… but it still felt like an accessory.

So what’s next?? Another project?? Projects are fun, but when you have a car for as long as I had that AE86, everything becomes near perfect. Starting fresh seems like a real PITA. I’ll have to start with something brand new so I can skip the awful steps that include scrubbing, hammering, painting, grinding, welding, pressing bushings and finding weird trim pieces and fasteners.

DISCLAIMER: While the AE86 has actually been removed from my garage, the ST185 still sits. I have a signed paper and a small sum of money.
DISCLAIMER2: I might not actually want an FR-S… but the way used cars look in Calgary makes me feel like I don’t have a choice.

The reason why it feels near perfect, is because your hachiroku IS near perfect.

FR-S is the new way. Sad that the panda coupe is probably never coming back, but look forward to the spring with the brand new car.

Hopefully you got some good money for your toys to put down on the Scion. You won’t want to start over used. It takes forever, the work is hard and boring, and in the end you just have a shitty old car.

*I* Should have pulled out a stack of cash when you put the AE86 for sale when you got married – which is what Paul H did.

(been reading your site for nearly a year and have never commented – here goes)

Ouch. Man. I can’t imagine how this would feel. I’ve spent a long, long time with my current Roadster. Even rebuilt after it died on the freeway. I’ve thought about selling once or twice. But to have it gone? man…

I wish you so much luck.

Sad, for things gone. Happy, for a new start.
(I would say go south for a car that is easier to work on).

oh boy.. now we’re never going to hear the end of how much you miss it. QR garage.. is empty.
