New Car

Bought something…

… Not an all-weather monster.

… Not an AE86…I came upon a few realizations recently.

One: AE86 is played out. I want to be different. I want to be in small company again. While I still love AE86… recent online pictures of my old coupe in it’s new owners hands, kinda of pushed me away hard. Not sure why… don’t know how to justify my feelings… But it happened.

Two: I want to circle tap. There’s just something about the underdog. I want a beat up 20 year old car that I can put my own flavour into and embarrass those who buy fancy new machinery. Or at the least… I won’t feel embarrassment at losing to the fancy machinery and I’ll have a lot of fun doing it. Winter auto-x in mind… what’s the joy in coming out in a car that can get FTD every time? (I have no reason to assume otherwise.)

Three: Timelessness. Fancy new machinery will not always be fancy new machinery. But the nostalgic stuff will always be nostalgic. That’s not to say some new machinery won’t someday receive the nostalgic status… but most of it won’t. And then… we’d be left with a characterless car that was cool back in the day, but has become a curiosity of sorts.

I’m making it sound like I maybe bought something really cool, but I didn’t. In fact, this maybe be the car purchase I question the most… and I’ve bought a lot of cars. That could be because, it’s a model that’s brand new to me. That could be because… it’s a well looked after, but tragically flawed example. That could be because it’s a model that I generally find incredibly ugly, and I’m wondering what the hell I’m going to do to retain some pride on the street.

But… it still has a gigantic following for a 20 year old car… and it’s got some really cool technical features. There has to be something behind so many people’s enthusiasm right?

We’ll see.

Bought cheap… many hours in the barn to come.
