The movie Speed Racer looks stupid. No one really enthusiastic about cars lined up to watch that movie on opening night did they? It definitely never crossed my mind. The movie has been out for a year and a bit, and somehow, at the recommendation of a friend of a friend I sat down and watched it…. with really low expectations.
And that might be why I actually liked it.
And a couple weeks later… I’m still thinking about it. It’s really just a fun, kid oriented movie… and some of the car gadgets and acrobatics are absurd. But the boy racer lifestyle really shines through, and the only thing that has ever captured that so well is Initial D. Beyond that however… there are some interesting vehicle concepts that really grab your attention and ask your imagination for consideration. Like… Rear wheel steering. Just think about it. All drivability issues aside, it could actually be really really cool and useful.
