V8Less SCC – For myself, the V8-less Urban Battle was an opportunity to try my hand at drifting, something I’ve only ever thought about doing, and never really tried. The challenge included a car show, drag races, auto-x, and by invitation, exhibition drift competition. Nothing in the past few years has taught me more about driving. Rage2 at Beyond was generous enough to organize a couple of practice events for those of us unfamiliar with drifting the car. I had considerable difficulty at first controlling the car. I often spun out mid-corner, or was forced to hand-brake to get the car to rotate on entry. With help from others, I learned a lot about how to gently work the car. I often braked too hard causing understeer, turned in too sharply, or simply entered too fast. Over three practice days, I evolved from not being able to drift entry to exit in any corner, to linking corners in a continuous drift. The more I drive 86, the more I learn how important smooth inputs are. I fall deeper and deeper in love with my car.
The interest in drifting has grown enormously in the past year, but still I was quite amazed at the turnout and anticipation for our sideways runs at the days end. Devin from DoriKaze and I, decided on Saturday morning practice that we would attempt running tandem for the exhibition. Devin missed the first practice session, came in cold, and still proved himself as skilled as any. Never before have I been so excited to drive a car. Mid corner, near full lock with the throttle wide open is something, but looking in the mirror and seeing someone doing the same only a couple feet off your bumper is unimaginable. In the end, I put together a great first run, spun on my second, and loused up the tandem in the final round with Devin. Still a great experience. Of the drift competitors, the guys at V8-less decided that Devin and I would split the trophy.
And so, I, now having had a first taste of drifting am hungry for more. Stay tuned as Ryan and I work together with the guys at Beyond to get something local going.
My trophy still sits on top of my sick SONY Ghettoblaster in the Garage with a mousetrap right behind it.
Mine is collecting dust in a closet at moms house. It would be in my garage if I had one.
That was the most fun I have ever had. It was so simple back then…I miss thoes days like crazy.
