2018 Version

Finally spring? Can hardly tell in this image, but it did crack 20 degrees yesterday. The snow is disappearing. And while I missed a preliminary solo event last weekend, the car is ready to go.

Itching for some reasonable way to modify the car within solo rules, I have jumped on board the new Solo Spec Coupe class. That means equipping the car with a full package of Tire Rack parts that include; Eibach Pro-Kit springs and sway bars, Koni dampers, and rear control arms plus camber bolts that allow all the camber adjustment one wants.

That part is fun. With an aggressive alignment, the car now feels like a. proper sports car on the street. I’ve aligned the car to the following settings.

Camber: -3.3(FR), -2.7(RR)
Toe: 0mm(FR), +3mm(RR)

The class does allow some flexibility with wheels… and that’s probably the biggest reason for me switching classes. 8J width is possible, which means YAJ becomes a viable source of shoes. I’m excited to run proper Advans on an 86 again. These are Super Advan Generation II, which look righteous, but are a bit on the heavy side. I’ve got some lighter Enkei TS10’s with the spec and slow as hell Azenis mounted on them.

Yes the tire is slow.

Camber, springs, sway bars, wider wheels… and lame Falken Azenis all add up to a package that has proven to be considerably slower than an unmodified (i.e. D Street) FRS or BRZ on other rubber.

That part is epically disappointing.

But at least my simple livery turned out as expected. I think the car looks great, but wonder if I am trying to make up for some short coming with numbers so big.

A lack of driving skill perhaps?
