It used to be the case that all the Japanese hachiroku drivers I knew, scoffed at anyone who needed forced induction or more displacement. It seems that now more displacement is acceptable. This is Masaharu’s response to hearing that I’m turbocharging my car. Somewhere along the way I decided that I don’t like the Beams motor… I did consider a hybrid 5SGE however, and sometimes have regret that I didn’t go that route. Is it too late to change my mind?? I desperately need the approval of those that came before me.
Why did you decide against the 3sg?
It’s an expensive swap I guess, but it would be an excellent candidate.
Especially in beams form.
Well I decided against my 5SGE swap because I don’t really know anything about building a motor, and at the time I imagined that modifying the base 4AGE was somehow preserving the nature of the car. All BS IMO now.
But the Beams in particular… a lot of people seem to find it’s output to be quite over-rated, and dimension wise, it’s even taller than an F20/22, which makes it a bit troublesome to fit in an AE86. The normal 3SGE head is much shallower. More than that… I’m pretty sure my driving style appreciates mid-range torque rather than lots of RPM.
