Turbo Sizes 2

TURBOSIZESI gave some of you the impression that I’d found an old HKS turbo kit.  That is not the case.  I’m building from scratch, but with the hope of creating something similar to what HKS had produced.  Anything can be done with money of course… I’m trying to do this with a very limited budget.  To this point, I’ve consistently observed the availability of three affordable turbos ($200 or less).  The IHI VF-11 can be found on first generation Legacy’s… but other related turbos (IHI RHB5 family) can be found on various Mazda’s and Ford products.  T25 seems to be sitting in the garages of every Nissan owner ever.  I have one that I got for free, and another one that I paid $75 for.  The TD04 was stock on most Subaru WRX’s and is commonly available as the T25, although not usually for less than $100.

Larger compressor maps can be viewed by clicking the links above.  I’ve highlighted an area based on a 6psi boosted 4AGE.  Note that they are all workable, however the VF-11 is probably best suited to my application.  That said I chose the T25… even when there is a VF-11 in the garage.  It’s not so much a technical reason… as it is the availability of manifolds/flanges and future upgrades.  However… it has also been the choice of most Japanese tuners (at least in the day when Japanese tuners touched AE86) and if I’m not entirely confident in my know how, I am confident that I can rely on those at HKS and Greddy etc etc.

4ages push a lot of exhaust. Rob ran a 2860 on his and it was fine. I heated my turbo up red hot when the maps said it was an ok size. Go a bit bigger.
    S14 GT28 turbos are cheap.
