New Laces 7

laces

The Dunlops are not wearing as well as I would have hoped.  In fact… even with 5 degrees of negative camber, I was killing the outside edge of my front tires.  I can’t justify the coin needed for 15’s now so I just flipped the tires side to side.  And… since I have a tonnes of shoes in the closet, why not mix it up?  These are 14 6.5J +8 Rays Engineering Volk 370’s circa 1986.   They are not in the best of condition, but they are nearly as light as the Advan’s are, and the centers almost perfectly match the Panda.

As soon as I mounted the tires on them… I thought I was going to regret it.  I’m not typically a fan of the fin type wheel.  Might be coming around…

But certainly… my mind would change if I could find some aero discs for them.

Maybe my hunt for 15’s doesn’t need to be so difficult afterall.

They look PERFECT! haha too bad my cooling disks are for 15’s, or else I could make some replicas for you!

The wheels are a nice change, IMO. I like how the car looks with the volks. Interesting that the dunlops are losing their outside shoulders with 5 degrees of static negative camber. I’m curious to see how the tire and camber look under large lateral loads.

Well… toe in definitely helps even out the wear that usually comes with so much negative camber. And beyond that… the car sees waaay more mileage at the track than it does on the street.

I think this picture shows it pretty good.

    Sidewalls are flexy!

FWIW… I’ve started playing with tire pressures and the pyrometer. I’m now up to 45psi in the front… and was getting tire temperatures even across the tread, and in the range of 110 degrees F. The rear in comparison worked out to 28psi with hotter outside edges but an even gradient… 113 110 107F-ish.

I think the car is making VERY good use of it’s skinny rubber.

Good info! I just noticed that the volks are 6.5″ wide compared to the 6.0″ advans. This might help a bit with the shoulder wear and slightly hotter outside edges on the rear. Would be interesting to see if the inside-to-outside temp spread lessens. I’ve always been curious as to how much effect wheel width has on tire temps, contact patches, and tire wear. The 0.5″ width difference probably won’t be enough to show obvious results though, or will it?

Any chance you might come to Saskatoon for Super Slalom? Sept 4th and 5th is the dates. I haven’t raced with you since 2005 in Red Deer iirc.

Out of town events aren’t don’t work easily this year, as my wife works evenings on the weekends and someone needs to look after my daughter. So probably not… I’m hopeful for next year though.

0.5″ width difference didn’t seem to matter… although… with the recent loss of our venue, I have no choice but to compare on two different surfaces.
